Are you all set for the Christmas season? By now, I’m sure you’ve already planned out your holiday calendar for all the fun festivities. You’ve got your gifts for your loved ones all sorted out, and your family get-togethers are all planned. But have you thought about your HVAC system in all this holiday madness? It’s important to make sure you have a cozy atmosphere and avoid any unnecessary HVAC mishaps during this time of year. So, keep reading for some tips from Troy Furnace & Air Conditioning to help you have a stress-free and comfortable holiday season!

1. Are Your Vents Clear?

‘Tis the season for Christmas decorations! But wait, before you deck the halls, let’s talk about something important. While it’s tempting to fill every nook and cranny with holiday cheer, don’t forget about your HVAC vents. Yes, those little grates that keep your home cozy. Blocking them with giant trees or massive packages can restrict airflow which will confuse your furnace and lead to heating issues. So, let’s keep the airflow flowing freely and the warmth spreading throughout your home by making sure those vents remain unblocked.

2. Is Your Thermostat Covered?

One more thing to keep in mind is that it’s easy to overlook your thermostat when you’re decorating. Just like your HVAC vents, placing objects on top of them, near or in front of them, can mess up their functionality and give you inaccurate temperature readings. And that can lead to your furnace producing too much or too little heat, which is not ideal. So, make sure to keep the area around your thermostat clear and avoid using it to hang any extra decorations.

3. Are There Flammable Items Nearby?

For many people, Christmas is all about creating a cozy atmosphere. It’s so easy to get caught up in setting up that whimsical vibe. However, it’s imperative to keep an eye out for flammable stuff like garlands, paper decorations, or wrapping paper. Make sure to keep them at a safe distance from heat sources like fireplaces, candles, or space heaters. You don’t want any fire hazards on your hands that could’ve been easily prevented, right? Oh, and don’t forget to properly extinguish or turn off any heating elements before leaving the house or hitting the hay for the night.

4. Is Your Outdoor Unit Protected?

Even though you won’t be using your outdoor unit (the condenser) during winter, it’s still important to give it some attention every now and then. Our dear Ohio weather can be tricky, so it’s a good habit to check on it periodically. Just make sure it’s clear of any loose debris like leaves, sticks, or twigs, and keep an eye out for stray outdoor items that might have blown on top of it. Even though condensers are built to withstand outdoor weather conditions, snow and ice coupled with debris or loose items can quickly pile up and cause problems and potential damage. You can also consider using a condenser cover for some extra protection.
